Abstract: Donaldson proved that if X is a closed (simply-connected) oriented smooth 4-manifold whose intersection-form I:H_2(X,Q) x H_2(X,Q) ->Q is negative definite then I is of the standard form over Z, i.e. I(x_1,...,x_n)=-(x_1^2+...x_n^2) where n denotes the rank of H_2(X;Z)/torsion. I will explain part of the proof of this theorem which is relevant to the gluing technique.
