Abstract: In this talk, I'll survey the notion of Gromov norm on homology classes of a topological space introduced by Gromov and Thurston (around 1980). We will see how this topological invariant is affected by certain geometric invariants (for example curvatures) on a Riemannian manifold. Finally, I'll mention a few recent work regarding the positivity of Gromov norm for closed manifolds of nonpositive curvature.
